In addition to the dozens of law student interns that PILI is able to fund out of its general fundraising efforts with law firms, foundations, individuals and corporations, PILI also is able to designate a number of Named and Honorary Interns each year, thanks to special funding commitments made by individual and organizational champions for public interest law.
For the summer of 2011, PILI proudly announces the following Named and Honorary Internships:
Arturo Hernandez is the Illinois State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Intern at Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. This Named Internship provides direct legal services to, or on behalf of, poor, disenfranchised and under-represented children.
Cynthia Cornelius from Loyola University School of Law and David Zwaska from DePaul University College of Law are the Union League Civic & Arts Foundation Interns at Cabrini Green Legal Aid and the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, respectively. The Union League Civic & Arts Foundation funds interns whose legal work will help advance and support education, civic responsibility, and the arts for Chicago youth and young adults.
Kyle Carlson, from Chicago-Kent College of Law, is the Kimball & Karen Anderson Intern at the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago. Recognizing the important work of the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, the Andersons generously provide annual Internship funding at this agency.
Caroline Simon from John Marshall Law School and Sophia Akbar from University of Iowa College of Law are the 2011 Florence Miller Memorial Interns at the Chicago Legal Clinic and the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law, respectively. Florence Miller, who passed away in 2008, was well-known in the internal trademark law community and a strong advocate for women in the profession. Through Florence Miller’s generosity, PILI was able to establish the Florence E. Miller Endowment Fund to provide much-needed funding for Interns.
Erin Grotheer, from DePaul University College of Law, is the Roslyn C. Lieb Honorary Intern at CARPLS, the Coordinated Advice and Referral Program for Legal Services. Funded by individual donors as well as PILI board members, the Roslyn C. Lieb Honorary Intern Fund honors the work and career of Roslyn C. Lieb.
Sun Hee Choi from Illinois University College of Law is the Alfred C. Tisdahl Memorial Intern at the Chicago Laywers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The Alfred C. Tisdahl Memorial Internship is funded by the Francis Beidler Foundation to honor the memory of prominent Chicago litigator Alfred C. Tisdahl, who died in 2000.
Kirtana Kalavapudi from Chicago Kent College of Law is this year's PILI Alumni Named Intern at Equip for Equality. New this year, the PILI Alumni Named Internship is funded by the joint efforts of PILI's Alumni across the country.
