About PILI and the Alumni Program |
|
| |
For thirty years, the Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) has pursued equal access to justice by creating opportunities for law students and lawyers to provide public interest and pro bono work in Chicago. PILI offers Internship & Fellowship programs for law students and new law school graduates, respectively, to work at public interest law agencies in Chicago. PILI also inspires and promotes pro bono work by members of the bar through its Pro Bono Initiative (PBI).
The PILI Alumni Program strives to maximize the natural link between alumni as a conduit into PBI and to generate a philanthropic relationship with alumni both on a personal and institutional level. The Alumni Circle is the leadership core of the Alumni Program. In addition to issuing the quarterly PILI Alumni Connection, the Alumni Program will also host three programs each year specifically designed for alumni and will include an Alumni Ambassador component.
Please be sure that PILI has your contact information, including your mailing address and e-mail address by e-mailing us at alumni@pili-law.org.
Since 1977, there have been over 2,600 PILI Interns and Fellows, many of whom we have lost touch with. If you know a former Intern or Fellow, please feel free to forward this newsletter on to them. |

Governor's Proposed Funding Cut Abandons Low-Income Residents In Need of Civil Legal Assistance Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich has slashed funding for the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation (IEJF), which is housed in the Attorney General's budget, from a proposed $5 million to $2 million, a draconian cutback which, if left unaddressed by the Illinois legislature, will deprive tens of thousands of low-income Illinois residents of urgently needed legal aid services. Allison Willis Singer, 2005 PILI Fellow
As a PILI Fellow with the Chicago Volunteer Legal Services Foundation (CVLS), Allison Willis Singer managed a caseload of family law, probate and bankruptcy matters. At CVLS, she honed her research, writing, interview and trial skills, and was given the opportunity to work on most of her cases from start to finish. "As a PILI Fellow, I learned the importance of developing rapport with a client at the earliest possible stage of representation. My PILI Fellowship helped me develop those skills much earlier in my career than I could have otherwise, given the sheer number of clients I interacted with on a daily basis." Allison's PILI Fellowship was sponsored by Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP, where she was a litigation associate before leaving the private sector to pursue public interest law full-time. While in private practice, she developed relationships with several of Chicago's public interest law agencies by working on pro bono cases. In 2007, Allison re-joined CVLS as a Staff Attorney. Today, she primarily works on the Access to Justice program---a partnership between the Chancery Division of the Circuit Court, the Chicago Bar Foundation, and CVLS---where she is appointed by the Court to represent defendants in foreclosure cases, declaratory actions and cases on administrative review. Allison plans to spend the balance of her legal career in the public interest, and is thrilled to have "found my home as a legal aid attorney." Allison remains connected to PILI as an active member of PILI's Alumni Program and as a member of the Alumni Circle, the program's leadership core.
Rachel Shapiro, 2005 PILI Intern
As a PILI Intern at the Legal Assistance Foundation's Disability Law Project, Rachel Shapiro handled cases involving foster children who were not receiving the appropriate special education services or who were facing expulsion from school. At LAF, she gained valuable experience in direct representation of students with disabilities at expulsion hearings and various school meetings. Following her PILI Internship, Rachel graduated from the Ohio State University Moritz School of Law and was awarded an Equal Justice Works (EJW) Fellowship at Equip for Equality, where she currently represents low-income students with disabilities in various special education matters, including Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings, expulsion hearings, mediations, due process hearings, and more. She also provides special education training to probation officers, public defenders, and other people who come into contact with youth with disabilities in the juvenile court system. Although her EJW Fellowship will end next month, Rachel will continue her project as a Staff Attorney with Equip for Equality. Rachel is committed to a career in public interest law and endeavors to further expand her project by teaming with pro bono attorneys to represent as many students with disabilities involved in the juvenile court system as possible. Rachel credits PILI with helping her find her niche in public interest law: "Without my summer PILI Internship, I would not have developed the necessary relationships and substantive legal knowledge to do the work I do today. I networked with numerous public interest agencies throughout the summer; ultimately with Equip for Equality, and based upon my experiences as a PILI Intern, I developed my EJW project."

Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago
Founded in the 1960's, the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF) has grown to become the largest and most comprehensive agency in Cook County providing free legal aid in non-criminal matters. The majority of its clients reside in the poorest, most segregated, and most disadvantaged communities in Cook County. LAF maintains a staff of over 90 experienced and dedicated attorneys, supported by over 30 paralegals and pro bono attorneys, to address a spectrum of legal areas and issues. LAF's clients include families making the welfare-to-work transition, elderly homeowners facing foreclosure, public housing tenants facing eviction, women and children being victimized by physical and sexual abuse, persons living with HIV/AIDS, and persons with disabilities. The free legal assistance LAF provides to its low-income clients gives them a greater measure of self-reliance, productivity, and dignity. In 2007, long-time LAF Executive Director, Sheldon Roodman, retired and was succeeded by former Deputy Director, Diana C. White. Since 1979, PILI has placed over 300 Interns and Fellows at LAF, generating over 100,000 hours of legal assistance to those in need. This summer alone, eight PILI Fellows and ten PILI-funded Interns are serving at LAF's downtown and neighborhood offices. Last month, PILI Board President, Kimball R. Anderson, and his wife, Karen Gatsis Anderson, received LAF's Lifetime Achievement Award for successfully mobilizing the resources of the private bar to ensure a steady supply of talented and committed legal aid attorneys to address the unmet legal needs of the most vulnerable people in out community. PILI also notes the recent retirement of Wallace C. Winter (pictured left), and salutes his nearly 40 years of distinguished service to LAF and his clients. Most recently, Wally served as Supervisory Attorney of LAF's Disability Law Project, representing hundreds of DCFS wards in special education and school expulsion cases. Among his numerous career achievements, Wally initiated litigation that led to the closure of Dixon Developmental Center and allowed 3,300 developmentally disabled adults to transfer from nursing homes to small community-based group homes. Wally also helped LAF launch its new Veterans' Rights Project, which helps veterans, active-duty service members, and their families receive the benefits to which they are entitled. Over the years, Wally supervised and mentored dozens of PILI Interns and Fellows. A former member of PILI's Board of Directors and the epitome of a career public interest lawyer, Wally received PILI's Distinguished Public Service Award in 2004. Several pro bono volunteer opportunities are currently available at LAF: (1) to serve as co-counsel in complex litigation matters; (2) to represent disabled children seeking Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits through the Children's SSI Termination Project; (3) to assist senior homeowners who face the possible loss of their home through the Foreclosure Defense Project; (4) to assist abused spouses and children of U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents with citizenship self-petitions under the Violence Against Women Act ("VAWA"); (5) to provide telephone advocacy on behalf of individuals in need of Medicaid and food stamp recipients who are having problems receiving their food stamps; (6) to provide information on filing requirements, procedural issues, and substantive law, as well as general advice on self representation, through the Federal Court Help Desk; (7) to interview scheduled clients through the Evening Intake Assistance Project. For more information about these and other pro bono opportunities, please visit www.lafchicago.org and www.IllinoisProBono.org.
