PILI to Host October 1, 2008 Alumni Program on Serving on a Board of Directors and Alumni Networking Reception
PILI will host three programs each year designed specifically for our alumni that will be planned and organized by the PILI Alumni Programming Committee.
On Wednesday, October 1, 2008, PILI will host its third alumni program of 2008. This program will feature a panel presentation on the ins and outs of serving on a nonprofit board of directors. PILI will also be distributing a listing of board service opportunities at all PILI-affiliated agencies. The program will be held from 6-7 and followed by a reception from 7-8. The previous program was held on May 14, 2008 at the offices of Mayer Brown. Renowned business development consultant, Gary Pines of Harding & Company, spoke on strategies for rainmaking in the legal industry. The program was followed by a reception, providing alumni with an opportunity to network with fellow PILI Alumni.

Gary is a sales/business development trainer/coach specializing in professional services … working mainly with the “doers” of the work who also will have to be “sellers” of the work. He has worked with many different types of professionals including lawyers, accountants, consultants, management consultants, actuaries, wealth management professionals, executive search recruiters, engineers, chemists, communication consultants, architects, psychologists.
Gary has worked with teams of professionals as well as individuals to develop new business at DLA Piper, The National Association of Women Lawyers, Tressler, Soderstrom, Maloney & Priess, Ernst & Young, Russell Reynolds, Navigant Consulting, Oliver Wyman (incl. Mercer Management Consulting and Mercer Delta), Stout Risius Ross, Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin, SRI Consulting, XRoads Solutions Group, MorrisAnderson, Watson Wyatt, RHR International, Diamond Technology Consultants, Prophet International, Kroll, Daylight Forensic & Advisory, The Northern Trust, etc.
Gary's background includes actuarial, benefits and human resource consulting with an emphasis on business development and marketing roles for national consulting firms. Gary spent almost twenty years with Towers Perrin, a global human resource consulting firm. He successfully developed business with major corporations that included Baxter International, Sears, Kraft Foods, McDonald’s, The Northern Trust Bank, Ameritech, Brunswick Corporation, The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, The Chicago Board Options Exchange, Leo Burnett and others.
Gary is involved in numerous civic, trade and charitable activities including The Economic Club of Chicago, The Executives’ Club of Chicago, The Chicago Public School System, Menttium (a mentoring group for professional women), The Board of AJC, and was a previous President of his local United Way.
In the past two years Gary has spoken to The National Association of Women Lawyers, DFK, a national alliance of accounting firms, The Assn of Professional Insurance Women, The American Bankers Association Wealth Management Conference (speaking on Creating Wealth Management Rainmakers), The Executives’ Club of Chicago Professional Services Group, alumni groups of both The University of Michigan and Kellogg, The SMPS (build/design marketing leaders), The Chicago Real Estate Women, The Society of Actuaries Chicago Actuarial Association, The Business Executives Association, etc.
Gary is an actuary and a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He has an undergraduate degree from Lawrence University and a Masters degree from the University of Michigan’s School of Business.

The first program, drawing over 30 for Interns and Fellows, was held on Wednesday, February 27th at the offices of Kirkland & Ellis and was entitled "Networking Skills for Lawyers." Susan Sneider, Director of Marketing and Business Development at Freeborn & Peters was the facilitator for this program.

Susan R. Sneider has worked as a lawyer and management consultant in the legal industry for over two decades. She created the first in-house legal department for Turtle Wax, Inc,, served as a management consultant for Hildebrandt International, and founded New Vistas Consulting. She is the well-know author of the American Bar Association publication, "A Lawyer's Guide to Networking." She has recently joined Freeborn & Peters LLP as its Director of Marketing & Business Development.

This year's annual PILI reception, "Celebrating Pro Bono," will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the Harold Washington Library Center's Winter Garden Room.
