In 2010, PILI launched a training series for alumni to learn about specific areas of law and related pro bono opportunities with public interest law organizations. Lunch and 1.0 hour of CLE credit will be provided to those who attend each training.
The first program was hosted by Hinshaw & Culbertson on Thursday, May 20th from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. and featured Lawyers Committee for Better Housing. Attendees learned about volunteer opportunities with the Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) and specifically, the basics of defending low-income tenants in Eviction Court. Attorneys from LCBH presented and answered questions on how the eviction process works and how to contribute to LCBH's mission of ensuring safe, decent and affordable housing for Chicago’s tenants by representing clients in Eviction Court.
The second program was hosted by Jones Day on Monday, August 2nd from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. and will feature Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. When adults can no longer safely or responsibly handle their personal and/or financial affairs, a court may be asked to appoint a guardian. The guardian will have the legal authority to make decisions and take actions necessary to care for and protect the disabled person. CVLS handles Adult Guardianship cases in two capacities: As attorney for the proposed Guardian, or as appointed GAL to help the court determine whether the guardianship is necessary. CVLS will provide comprehensive training for interested volunteers in both areas, including written materials, and will additionally provide attorneys with simple, entry-level cases to handle.
