Alumni Program & Reception: Service Opportunities in the Public Interest Law Community
PILI is organizing a program and reception for Alumni on Thursday, April 8th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to be hosted by Kirkland & Ellis LLP. The one hour program will focus on providing information to alumni about pro bono, board service and other volunteer opportunities within the public interest law community. Following the program, there will be an informal networking reception for alumni. This will be the only program and reception event in 2010, so be sure to join us! Additional information about the program will be available in the coming days.

PILI Launches Alumni Public Interest Law Training Series
This year, PILI is launching a training series for alumni to learn about specific areas of law and related pro bono opportunities with public interest law organizations. Lunch and CLE credit will be provided to those who attend each training.
The first program will be hosted by Hinshaw & Culbertson on Thursday, May 20th from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. and will feature Lawyers Committee for Better Housing. Learn about volunteer opportunities with the Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing (LCBH) and the basics of defending low-income tenants in Eviction Court. Attorneys from LCBH will present and answer questions on how the eviction process works and how you can contribute to our mission of ensuring safe, decent and affordable housing for Chicago’s tenants.
The second program will be held on Monday, August 2nd from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. and will feature Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. More information about this program will be available in the coming weeks.

2009 Alumni Program & Reception Events
The final alumni program and reception of 2009 was held on Wednesday, November 18th and hosted by Locke Lord Bissell & Liddell LLP. As with past programs, the first hour was devoted to a topical discussion. The theme of the topical discussion was “Lawyer to Leader: Volunteer Management Skills for the Public Interest Law Attorney,” with topics including how to run an effective meeting, managing a committee or board, working with staff, and motivating other volunteers. The topical discussion was followed by a casual networking reception for former PILI Interns and Fellows.
The second alumni program and reception of 2009 was hosted by Jenner & Block on Thursday, July 23rd. This event featured a panel discussion entitled, "The Current Economy’s Impact on the Public Interest Law Landscape" and will be followed by a reception. In addition to PILI's Alumni, supervisors from PILI's Participating Agencies were also invited to attend.
The first alumni program and reception of 2009 was hosted by Howrey LLP on Tuesday, April 28th. A panel of PILI alumni described their path to their career in public interest law. The program was entitled, "The Path to a Career in the Public Interest Law Sector."
